Once, the fishing village of Nyksund was among the most modern on the coast. Throughout the 20th century, the village was an economic powerhouse in Vesterålen. Here, on the edge of the open sea, they were closest to the fishing grounds, so boats came here for the seasonal fisheries.
Møysalen on Hinnøya is, at 1262 meters, the highest point in Vesterålen and Norway's second-highest mountain on an island.
Concrete piers designed for large-scale operations. Once, the fishing village of Nyksund was among the most modern on the coast. The outer side of Andøya is rugged and barren, with a varied landscape and distinctive coastal communities. There is no protective archipelago here. The Atlantic stands right up against it.
From the harbor in the fishing village of Nykvåg, Bø in Vesterålen. Here, you'll find abundant birdlife and the scent of salty sea air. A paradise for hiking, cycling, and photo safaris. This is the place for recreation and inspiration, whether for active or leisurely experiences.
Picturesque Rinøya in Lødingen municipality, with the national mountain Stetind and the Vestfjorden in the background. In the past, fishing and whaling were the most common occupations among the population.
I have many fond memories from Andøya. But this evening on Bleikstranda was probably one of the best. The open sea was almost like a mirror, the landscape was lit up by the warm rays of the midnight sun, and children's laughter filled the evening hours. As a perfect backdrop, we had the iconic bird mountain Bleiksøya, which every summer hosts one of the largest puffin colonies in Norway.
Pier facility at the innermost part of the fjord at Straumsjøen, Bø in Vesterålen. Straumsjøen is an old fishing village that once had steamship stops, a post office, and shops.
Bleik Bleik Beach stretches on both sides of the dense, picturesque fishing village of Bleik. This is a 2.5-kilometer-long fine-grained tropical paradise of a beach. To the north lies the mountain Røyken. Bleik is an ancient settlement with compact housing.
A whole little world of interconnected mires, small and large lakes in countless formations, streams, and ponds. The area is called Skogvoll Nature Reserve and was established in 1983 to preserve a large and important wetland area with associated plant and animal life.
The settlement at Skogvoll on Andøya is wonderfully located. The buildings lie on a thin strip of land between the open sea on one side and Skogvoll Lake on the other. I flew over in a small plane on a fine summer day. I can imagine what it's like to live here when winter storms rage. North of the settlement is a mire and wetland area that stretches across the island from Skogvoll Lake to Dverberg-Saura on the east side.
